The one part of the hotel that’s a direct recreation of the Ledges is its sweeping lobby. The double-height space, with its black-and-white limestone and marble tile floor, is wrapped by a custom wallpaper inspired by a lush landscape mural painted by Cushing’s great-grandfather in 1905 at the Ledges. Cushing knows a few things about a Newport summer, although his summers were anything but typical. If there were such a thing as Newport royalty, he could count himself among its ranks.
