The mansion was built as a summer "cottage" between 1888 and 1892 for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt. It was a social landmark that helped spark the transformation of Newport from a relatively relaxed summer colony of wooden houses to the now-legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. The fifty-room mansion required a staff of 36 servants, including butlers, maids, coachmen, and footmen. The mansion cost $11 million (equivalent to $313 million in 2019; $660 million in Gold-dollar equivalence (1890 $20 Double Eagle)) of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet (14,000 m³) of marble.

Cross-section microscopy and instrumental analysis reveals an interesting technology. The metal tape started out as thin copper wire, which then received a rather thick coating of silver. The threads look gold, so the silver was possibly gold-gilded using electroplating methods. At some point during the process, the round wire was rolled flat. There are miles of this particular material, and its manufacture and application to fibers deserves further study. The dining room seat furniture at Marble House has gilded-bronze structural elements and a cut velvet textile with metallic threads.

Wherever you go in town, you see the name Howard Gardiner Cushing. After the artist died at the age of 47, his friend Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney raised the funds to build the Howard Gardiner Cushing Gallery in 1919 at the Newport Art Museum. His work ranged from impressionistic portraits to fanciful chinoiserie landscapes.

Vanderbilt's older brother Cornelius Vanderbilt II subsequently built the largest of the Newport cottages, The Breakers, between 1893 and 1895. The mansion still stands in great visible condition and is used for many things such as guided and non-guided tours, as well as hosting various special events, parties, and weddings. The Marble House is one of the more popular tourist destinations in Newport, RI. In keeping with custom of the time, the Vanderbilts also commissioned a sizeable carriage house to be built for Marble House diagonally across Bellevue Avenue, on what is now known as Rovensky Avenue.
The house took almost four years to complete; the Vanderbilts opened it with an ostentatious housewarming in August 1892. The couple did not use the house together very long before their marriage failed. Alva married Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont at the beginning of 1896 and moved a few houses down Bellevue to Belmont's Belcourt (see NE165), another residence by Hunt. This was restored in 1988 and moved back from its eroding site by the Preservation Society of Newport County, which maintains both it and the main house for public viewing. Kingscote is a landmark of the Gothic Revival style in American architecture.
The facade of the mansion features bays that are defined by two story Corinthian pilasters. These frame arched windows on the ground floor and rectangular ones on the second on most of the facade. A curved marble carriage ramp, fronted by a semi-circular fountain with grotesque masks, spans the entire western facade. The center of this facade, facing Bellevue Avenue, features a monumental tetrastyle Corinthian portico. The north and south facades match the western in basic design.
The Preservation Society permits non-flash interior photography in all of its mansions except Hunter House, and outdoor photos at all properties, for personal, non-commercial use only. You can purchase tickets through our website or in person at The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, Rosecliff or Green Animals Topiary Garden. Ticket sales are not available at any other Newport Mansions property. The Breakers and Marble House also offer family tours in English.
Visitors are welcome to carry personal items such as purses, camera bags and knapsacks with them during their tour. But suitcases, carry-on luggage, duffel bags or oversized bags of any kind that could cause potential damage to historic surfaces and furnishings are not permitted. Please leave such items in your car prior to entering the property.
Originally, the pink Numidian marble is from Roman times. With the Grand Trianon as his inspiration, Hunt focused on making the Newport Marble House similar to a palace. Throughout the Newport Marble House, there are many French accents. It also features other styles, including Gothic Revival and Rococo design elements in a couple of the rooms.
Architect Stanford White modeled Rosecliff after the Grand Trianon, the garden retreat of French kings at Versailles. The Preservation Society of Newport County acquired the house in 1963.
